STEWART, Donald Angus

April 27, 1925 – April 18, 2026

Don Stewart of Milden, Sask. passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at the Dinsmore Health Centre at the age of 101 years.

Don was the youngest of seven children born on April 17, 1925 on the family farm in the Bounty district to John W. (Jack) and Laura (Reid) Stewart.  He attended Eton School and finished high school in Bounty.  He was a prairie child and grew up on the family farm during the depression years of the 30’s followed by the war years.  These years were the foundation of his life.

He enlisted in the Army after harvest in October 1943 at the age of 18.  He was assigned to the Armoured Corps.  He left for overseas in January 1945 and landed in Greenock, Scotland and then on to Army Camp in Gildford, England.  He was shipped to Holland in April 1945 and drove a light armoured personell carrier until the end of the war.  In June 1945 he trained in jungle warfare in preparation for war with Japan until August 1945.  For the remainder of the war he was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Wilhelmshaven, Germany helping displaced civilians, families, and soldiers.

On November 17, 1951 he married Irma Mireau of Harris, and they settled in the village of Milden.  The community became the fabric of his life and he became an advocate for the small town, a good school, a thriving hospital with a doctor, and the family farm.  He was active in the community, serving with the Milden Legion, the Milden Village Council, the Rosetown School Division Board as the Milden/Sovereign rep, and volunteering time to numerous committees and local events  He had a vast knowledge of the Milden and Fertile Valley districts and he was very proud that he and Irma were on the Milden History Book Committee compiling a written account of the families past and present that settled the area and events that shaped the community.

He was hard working, well read, a clear thinker, and self taught on many things.  He did not travel far, for the farm and home were always where his heart was.  The love of the land, farming, and his family were his whole life.  He was the last surviving member of his generation and with his passing, the last of the Stewart name in the district.  He is also the last family member of one of the pioneer families that settled in the Bounty district that still has family that live on the original homestead and in the home that he grew up in.

He was predeceased by his wife Irma of 54 years, and his daughter Jackie.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Laura Stewart; brothers and sisters, Robert, Eileen, Edna (Ken Lynn), John, Charles (Wilma Becket), and Thomas.

He was predeceased by Irma’s parents, Ovide and Adelia (St. Pierre) Mireau; brothers and sisters, Louis (Helen Fischer), George (May Ross), Cyp (Vera Sagmoen), Theresa (Leo Fischer)  Alphone (Irene Provost), Felix (Verna Exelby), Joe, Marie, Beth (Leo Fischer), Laurent (Lucille Lachapelle), Lynn (John Stoeber), Cy (Delores Mann).  He was predeceased by several nieces and nephews.

Don is remembered by his daughters, Barbara (Brent) Hayes and Cheryl (Gerald) Funk; son in law, Jerry Spence; 7 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sister in law RoseAnn Mireau, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Dinsmore Health Centre for the excellent care and the many times they went out of their way to help dad.

As he wished, no formal funeral service will be held.  He will be laid to rest at the Fertile Valley Cemetery, with a private family gathering to take place at a later date.
