After decades of dedication to student athletics, Rosetown Central High School Vice-Principal Gary Paproski has been recognized with the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Service Award, a fitting tribute as he prepares to retire at the end of the school year.

Mr. Paproski’s impact on high school sports in west-central Saskatchewan spans more than a quarter century. Since 1998, he has coached both badminton and senior football at Rosetown Central High School (RCHS), building programs rooted in commitment, integrity, and student development. Over the years, his contributions have helped shape not only competitive teams, but generations of student-athletes.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Paproski has played a central role in hosting major events, including regional badminton championships and numerous district competitions. His football accomplishments include capturing a 9-a-side provincial gold championship in 2005, along with bronze medals in the 2A 6-a-side division in both 2023 and 2024. These achievements reflect a consistent standard of excellence across his teams.
Beyond wins and medals, Mr. Paproski is known for the countless hours he devoted to the football program. Each summer, he personally ensured the school’s field was in top condition, providing a safe and high-quality playing surface for both local athletes and visiting teams. That behind-the-scenes work demonstrated a deep commitment to both student safety and school pride.
Mr. Paproski’s involvement in badminton has been equally extensive, contributing to both junior and senior programs over roughly 26 years. His athletes have earned numerous district and regional titles, with several advancing to provincial competition, three capturing silver medals during his coaching career. His presence at competitions has become synonymous with sportsmanship and respect for the values of high school athletics.
Colleagues say Mr. Paproski’s influence extends far beyond the scoreboard. Mitchell Wintonyk, President of the West Central District Athletic Association and Mr. Paproski’s colleague at RCHS, highlighted the lasting impact Mr. Paproski has had on students.
“Gary’s dedication to the students at RCHS is unmatched,” Mr. Wintonyk said. “Throughout his career he has dedicated countless hours to bettering students of Rosetown through sport. He has instilled core character principles, inspired, and overall made students better through his teaching and mentoring in high school sport. This award reflects the lasting imprint he has made on the many students at RCHS far beyond the games.”
As Mr. Paproski prepares to step away from his role in education, the SHSAA Merit Award serves as a recognition of not only his achievements, but also the legacy he leaves behind. His career has helped elevate athletics at RCHS while shaping the character and experiences of countless students.
With his retirement marking the end of an era, the RCHS community will undoubtedly feel the loss of a tireless advocate for school sport, but his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
