Sports This Week: Rosetown, Elrose athletes post early season badminton, wrestling results
Badminton
Despite a small showing, senior badminton players from Rosetown Central High School did well at a March 21 tournament in North Battleford.
“Because travel was not recommended, I only took two players,” said coach Gary Paproski.
Hailey Burton won a bronze medal in girls singles and Griffin White won a silver medal in boys singles.
The two then paired up and won gold in mixed doubles, Paproski said.
Senior players were to play in Wilkie on Friday and in Swift Current on Saturday, the coach said.
North West Central School has a junior and a senior team and Leah Anne Davis coaches them both, she said.
The senior team consists of doubles players Madelyn Sittler and Emma Christison, Madison Mosterd and Dallas Bradley, and Caden Zimmer and Ray Roesch, along with singles players Isaac Turk and Eden Gilroy.
The junior team is made up of doubles players Brady Nakonechny and Landon McMillan, Teagan Swan and Lane Suter, Jack Rechenmacher and Blake Dorner, Corbin Sittler and Owen Rohs, Carly Stephens and Taylor Christison, Leighton Bacon and Brooklyn Mosterd, and Jayme Davis and Amara Zimmer, along with singles players Cooper Turk and Mya Roesch.
Junior intersectional playoffs will be held on April 14 and senior sectional playoffs on April 15, both in Rosetown, Davis said.
The Wildcats have had no matches, only practices, she said last Friday.
Elrose Composite School has a 12-member senior team coached by Jeff Kingwell. They have been playing exhibition games against Lucky Lake, Beechy and Dinsmore teams.
Their first tournament of the season was scheduled for Swift Current last Saturday and they have another in Rosetown on April 18, Kingwell said.
Rayshelle Nisbet, Jacey Fullerton and Mariette Strydom are coaching the junior team.
“They have a lot of players and have also been playing exhibition each week on Tuesday evenings against Kyle, Lucky Lake, Dinsmore and Beechy. They have not yet played in any tournaments,” Kingwell said.
Wrestling
Elrose Wrestling Club members did well at the Grade 6-and-under provincial championship meet held in Warman on the March 21-22 weekend. Jim Ellingson won a gold medal in his category, club coach Russell Fersch said.
Zandré Jonker won a bronze medal in his category.
Elizabeth MacDonald, Grayson Hunter and Cain Trayhorne each finished fourth in their categories.
Bowling
Masters bowling tournaments were held in Saskatoon on March 21-22. As a result, Kelly Graham, Dianne Misener and Courtney Jones have made the teaching ladies team, which will be coached by Dave Graham.
Walter Fernets has made the senior team. They and other Saskatchewan bowlers qualified for nationals, which will be held in Hamilton, Ont., at the end of June and start of July, Penny Andersen from the local alley said.
The first set of Learn to Bowl sessions wound up with a mini-tournament last week, Andersen said.
Gymnastics
Rosetown Gymnastics Club members have been on a break of a few weeks, club coach Fern Dyer said. Their next meet is on April 8, Dyer said.
