Sports This Week: Hockey, Curling, Bowling

By David McIver

Hockey

Twelve games are scheduled for Minor Hockey Weekend, starting with the under-seven Moore and Gregory teams playing at 4 p.m. this Friday and ending with the under-15 boys versus Turtleford between 5 and 7:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Curling

Six teams were entered in the Ice-Breaker Spiel this past Saturday.

They were to play four six-end games over draws starting at 10 a.m. and 1, 4 and 6:30 p.m.

Basketball

Rosetown Central High School teams got back into games this past weekend and continue this week.

The senior girl Royals host the Biggar Blazers on Wednesday and then go to a tournament at LCBI High School on Friday and Saturday. The senior girls were to play in a tournament in Wilkie this past weekend.

The senior boys team plays in Biggar on Thursday and then goes to a tournament in Hafford on the weekend.

The junior boys team, which was to play in Delisle last Friday, will host the St. Gabriel Saints on Wednesday and Leader next Monday.

The Rosetown Central High junior girls team had entered an eight-team tournament in Outlook this past Friday and Saturday.

Bowling

Dave Brigham won the singles tournament held here on Jan. 3. Cliff Forsyth placed second, ahead of Dale Der and Perry Russell. There were 29 entries, which was “a really good turnout,” said Penny Andersen of the local alley. Besides these local competitors, bowlers drove from areas around Biggar and Perdue, she said.

Normally, this alley would put a singles tournament on closer to Christmas but Perdue had one on Dec. 27 and so, not to interfere with that tournament, this tourney went later, said Andersen.

Rosetown and Biggar alleys co-hosted a Masters - YBC zone round over the holidays.

First among bantam-aged youth bowlers was the team of Daxon Summach, Tate Ironside and Master bowler Kelly Graham. They bowled 271 pins over their average.

Senior-aged youth bowlers Katherine Lindridge and Layla Vallely and Master bowler Bill Shkolny finished 166 P.O.A. in the senior category.

Biggar bowlers won in the junior division. These were Ashton Kramer and Declan Westgard and Master Melissa Raschke.
