Meet Orange Memories resident Elaine Young
This is a brief look into her school years, as written by her.
I was born at the Ponteix hospital on July 28, 1939. I grew up on a farm eighteen miles from town. At that time the local school had closed the year I was to start. The superintendent decided to let a local teacher tutor my older sister, another girl her age and me in her own home. For two days a week we sat around her dining room table. The rest of the week was spent doing homework. She was a wonderful teacher who, years earlier, had taught my father.
In September she would say to us, "Now keep your scribblers neat and tidy." Good handwriting was a must. I cut out pictures, pasted and glued, made maps and did my best. In the summer she would take my scribblers to the fair in Shaunavon. Each time I won firsts and seconds. She was the guiding light in my life.
I finished my Grade Ten and then went to Ponteix to live with my grandparents for Grades Eleven and Twelve. I did well in those grades because I had such a good beginning to my education. I placed second in oratory twice, and after study I skated and danced through those years.
After graduation I went to Regina Grey Nuns Hospital for nurses' training, a new learning path and one that would lead me into the future.
