Martens, Johnston, Robbie win league awards

The Rosetown Redwings got a 12-day break in their Cross Roads Hockey League first-round playoff series with the Kindersley Kodiaks.

The Redwings, who defeated the Kodiaks 6-1 here on Feb. 7, won’t play them until Friday.

“Kindersley’s scheduling and no goalie” were the reasons why the game date wasn’t a week earlier, said Redwing head coach Curtis MacDonald.

But apart from suspended players - Cole Lewis for four games and Corben Hogan for one game - all of the Redwings should be dressing for that game, said the coach.

The Kodiaks also have suspended people: coach Brian Reid for three games and player Hunter Smith for one game, said MacDonald.

The Redwings led 2-0 and 6-0 by periods.

Jared Jagow and Kane Dubé each scored twice. Walker Doetzel opened the scoring at 14:03 of the first period. Jordan Johnston got a goal and two assists. Eric Robbie had five assists.

Noah Martens made 16 saves in the Rosetown goal.

Kodiak counterpart Kaden Elliott stopped 16 shots.

Prior to the game, league official Sam Somerville presented league achievement awards.

For the second year in a row, Martens was selected as the league’s top goaltender. Johnston won the top-scorer award and was also selected as the league most valuable player. Eric Robbie won the top defenceman award.

Should the Redwings advance to the league final, they will have to work games around their senior C provincial playoff series with the Outlook Ice Hawks.

They host the Ice Hawks on Feb. 27, play in Outlook on March 6 and, if necessary, here on the 8th.
