Looking Back column sparks family discussion
Newly arrived Mennonite settlers in the Herschel area are believed to be shown attending an English class in 1926, possibly at the Herschel school, according to information shared by Devin Wiens after a recent Looking Back column sparked family discussion. The photograph, which may also have been taken at the Lamborn farmhouse, surfaced after Wiens mentioned the column in a family group chat, prompting relatives to share details and identify those pictured. From left are Bernhard Klassen, Bernhard B. Wiens, John Klassen, Jacob J. Wiens, Sarah and Jake Wiens, Jacob B. Wiens, Corny Klassen, Gerhard B. Wiens and Peter P. Sawatzky. Wiens noted the chalkboard in the background suggests the image was taken at the school.
