Letter to the Editor: Rosetown Businesses: Clean Up Your Act

Years ago, when I used to help with coaching minor hockey, you had to go to a coaches clinic to be certified. One of the things I learned, and it always stuck with me, was that you should never just dwell on the negative. For every negative, you need a positive to go with it.

First, some of the negative. The businesses along Highways 7 and 4 need a lesson in how to maintain their property. It is poor advertising for our town to see weeds and grasses out of control around the buildings and parking lots. Take some pride in the look of your property.

I stopped at Co-op and Simplot to get prices on sprayers and chemicals. A sprayer can cost between $20 and $40. A 10-litre jug of Roundup costs $68. So, for less than $100, you can control everything, and that jug of chemical would probably last for five years on most-sized lots.

If you have grass on your property, cut it at least every two weeks (every week is better). A lot of properties become a once-a-month job. Then, when it does get cut, it looks dead.

It isn't just Highways 4 and 7. Drive down the back alleys of Main Street. Not much better, is it? A couple of lots on First Street East and First Street West have weeds, and one has abandoned cars on it. Clean it up.

Now for the positive. Thank you to those businesses who do keep their property in decent, visible condition. Not much to be positive about, is there?
