Elrose Aces earn first win of season

By David McIver

After losing their first four games, the Elrose Aces earned their first win of the season last week, defeating the Riverhurst Raiders 12-8 on Tuesday in Elrose.

"We led from the start," said the Aces' on-field manager, Barry Martin.

"It was close a couple of times, but, technically, we were in control," Martin said.

Logan Marchuk started on the mound, followed by Garrett Calwell, with Michael Bouclin pitching the final inning, he said.

The Aces benefited from three unearned runs around the third inning because of wild pitches, Martin said. Those runs, along with "a couple of key hits," proved crucial in securing the victory.

"Our biggest problem this year is leaving too many guys on base, not scoring runs when we have the chance," Martin said.

As of the end of last week, the Aces, who were to play the Outlook Riverhawks yesterday, sat in the basement with a 1-4 record.

The Eston Ramblers led the league at 3-1, followed by the Beechy Breakers at 3-1-1, Dinsmore at 4-2, the U18 Wartime Marlins and Kyle Yellowjackets, both at 2-2, Outlook at 1-2-1 and Riverhurst at 2-4.
