Daniel Wiebe makes the Riders

By David McIver

Daniel Wiebe is living his dream, and he is doing it on the practice roster of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

"It feels amazing," said Wiebe, who made the team in his second try after being drafted in 2025.

"An opportunity is really what I'm looking for and that's what they're giving me. Couldn't be more excited to be playing for the Riders. Just excited to learn every single day and get better."

Wiebe caught the winning touchdown in the team's last preseason game at Griffiths Stadium.

"It wasn't a designed play by any means," he said. "Quarterback Brayden Schager was looking my way and made just a great throw and I was able just to get in there. A really exciting play for sure."

Originally from the Herschel area, Wiebe played Royals football through Grade 10 before moving to Saskatoon with family. He went on to play receiver for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, was drafted by the Roughriders in 2025, attended training camp, then returned to the Huskies for a fifth and final season, where he was named Canada West conference player of the year.

Starting quarterback Trevor Harris recently described Wiebe as "much more confident" in 2026 than during the 2025 camp and preseason.

Wiebe agreed.

"Yeah, I think there was a lot that I went through, even in this camp, that I learned from and kind of had to build that confidence up as I went on. Every day I feel like I am getting more confident, so just trying to keep that going."

Since making the team following the May 30 cut-down, a typical day includes morning practice and meetings, with afternoon sessions and workouts filling the rest of his schedule.

"It's been a journey but it's been really good."
