Canadians recycle record 8M kg of batteries in 2025: Call2Recycle

By Ian MacKay

Canadians sent more than eight million kilograms of dead batteries to recyclers in 2025 through Call2Recycle Canada.

The amount was the most in any year of its history, said a Call2Recycle statement that appeared on Feb. 18, National Battery Day.

The organization has collected over 60 million kilograms of old batteries since it formed. “That's about the weight of 500 blue whales,” the statement said.

Nine “iconic landmarks across the country” would light up that night to celebrate the occasion, including BC Place, the Calgary Tower, Toronto’s CN Tower and Niagara Falls, it said.

The day represented “an opportunity to recognize the essential role batteries play in our daily lives, and the shared responsibility we all have to recycle them responsibly when they reach the end of life,” said Joe Zenobio of North York, Ont., who heads Call2Recycle Canada.

The organization uses over 15,000 drop-off locations across the country, including Sarcan depots in Saskatchewan.
