Served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940-1945 as Leading Aircraftsman with the 411 Squadron.

In 2015, Herb was awarded the Legion D’Honneur by the French Government who knighted him in honour of his service on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.
