Margaret Henderson

April 12, 1925 - February 9, 2026

After a long and full life, Margaret Mary Henderson (nee Oakes) passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2026 in Rosetown, SK at the age of 100.

Margaret was born on April 12, 1925 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to James and Hilda Oakes.

Growing up, Margaret loved to sing and dance, two passions that would span the majority of her lifetime.

In 1942, at the age of 17, she signed up to serve her country and the allied forces in World War II.

Following training, Margaret would serve as a member of WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) while stationed at 10 Squadron near Melbourne, Yorkshire.

She became a truck driver, transporting troops around the base and moving supplies to and from nearby bases and towns.

It was at 10 Squadron where Margaret met her husband-to-be, Lloyd Henderson, a heavy bomber pilot.

The two were wed on Nov. 25, 1944 in Huddersfield and would remain married for 74 years, until Lloyd’s passing in 2019.

The newlyweds arrived by train in Herschel, SK on VE Day, May 8, 1945.

Together Margaret and Lloyd farmed near Herschel for more than 60 years while raising five children.

A loving and nurturing mom, Margaret unfailingly supported her kids in all their endeavours and dreams.

While raising a large family she was also active in the community, serving with the Herschel Legion and volunteering her time to numerous local events over years.

Aside from her family, there is nothing Margaret loved more than laughter.  She always adored a good gag or joke, often times the saltier the better.

Margaret loved to laugh with her friends, her children and grandchildren but most admirably, she could always laugh at herself.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, her husband Lloyd and their daughter Laurie.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Dawn, Grant (Joan), Maureen (Jim) and Warren (Marion).

She is also survived by nine grandchildren—Scott (Barb), Ryan, Adrian (Heather), Andrew, Daniel (Jenn), McLean (Jen), Korstiaan (Janaina), Jill (Lucas) and Brennan (Olenna); and 10 great grandchildren—Abigail, Breeanne, Estella, Brant, Sydney, Arlo, Hayden, Henley, Nickolai and Audrey.

At Margaret’s request, there will be no public memorial service.

Donations in Margaret’s memory may be sent to The Last Post Fund, a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that no veteran is denied a dignified funeral and burial due insufficient funds. For more information, visit: lastpostfund.ca.
