Town closes “Paper Lane” to move UFA land sale forward

Town leaders officially closed a lane that exists only on paper.
Councillors on Monday night gave three readings — with a few chuckles — to a bylaw closing a lane that, on the municipality’s map, leads to 14th Street East. It runs directly east from the intersection of Sixth Avenue East and Eighth Street East. The avenue turns northeast near the intersection.
“This was never, ever established, but it’s there on title,” said Amanda Bors, the acting chief administrator, during the council meeting.
The east-west lane appears on a town map passing through an area where town staff dump snow in the winter. The bylaw was needed to allow the sale of town land to UFA for its planned cardlock fuel station at the intersection of 14th Street and Highway 7.
“So, to subdivide this and sell it, we have to close this laneway,” she said, noting the bylaw must be submitted to a provincial body before its members can approve the subdivision application.
“No one uses it to access any property right now,” Bors added.
