Summer reading rewards return
By Brittany Booth
Rosetown Librarian and Archivist
Children participating in the TD Summer Reading Challenge can stop by the library once a week throughout the summer to pick up a coupon for a free round of mini golf or a free ice cream from the Tourism Centre.
Participants in either the TD Summer Reading Challenge or the Wheatland Reading Cup can log their reading minutes and submit tickets for prizes through wheatland.beanstack.org. Visit the library for help signing up or to pick up a paper log. Paper logs must be brought to the library so minutes can be entered online before the reading challenges wrap up at the end of August.
The challenges begin July 1. Good luck to all participants!
Children of the Wild by Kevin Powers (historical fiction). Ewer’s Rock, Virginia, 1917. Roy Young is restless and determined to leave the rural valley to make his mark on the 20th century. Samantha Hatton, the minister’s daughter, knows the town expects her and Roy to marry, but she longs for more. The arrival of Ennis Duke, a mysterious wild boy tending cattle high in the mountains, changes everything.
Whisper Creek by Allison Brennan (thriller). After the sudden death of her husband, Ellen McKenna is doing everything she can to keep her Texas farm afloat. While many neighbours have agreed to sell their farms to a local businessman, Ellen refuses to give up. As a storm brings heavy rain to the valley, strange events begin to unfold, forcing Ellen to confront the forces threatening her family and livelihood.
The Children by Melissa Albert (fantasy). Guinevere Sharpe’s childhood has been immortalized in the pages of her mother Edith’s bestselling books. In reality, she and her older brother grew up neglected and hungry. Blood, Rust and Steel by Stuart MacBride (mystery). After 30 years on the force, Detective Inspector Roberta Steel is finally retiring. But northeast Scotland is not finished with her yet. With a violent protest, rising far-right politicians and a desperate former colleague seeking help, her final weeks on the job may prove to be her toughest.
Good at Being Alive by Elizabeth O’Roark (romance). Rebecca “Bex” Daniels is grieving the loss of her father, who died in a tragic train accident, leaving her in charge of the family travel agency. When her father’s business partner, Theo Porter, reveals the company is on the verge of collapse, their only hope is a reality television deal requiring them to pose as newlyweds travelling the world on their honeymoon. As they navigate public scrutiny and personal loss, they must decide whether their relationship can survive once the cameras stop rolling.
