Sports This Week: Spring Shoot rescheduled as Legion darts calendar shifts

The Rosetown Legion Darts Club has been forced to move its Spring Shoot to this Saturday. The change comes after other tournaments shifted dates, said club president Aaron Walker.

The Main Event has been moved from Easter weekend to March 28. The provincial championship tournament has been relocated from Regina to Saskatoon and is set for March 14.

One event remaining on its previously announced date is the provincial Legion pool championship, which will be held in Rosetown on April 17, Walker said.

Badminton

Gary and Brendan Paproski are coaching the senior badminton team at Rosetown Central High School.

“Just got rolling this week,” Gary said Friday. Twenty-three students have signed up, although he expects the final number to settle in the high teens.

Tournaments are scheduled for North Battleford on March 21, Swift Current on March 28 and the RCHS home tournament on April 18. District playoffs are set for April 23 in Kindersley, with regional and provincial playoffs slated for May 2 and May 9, respectively, at sites to be determined.

At the junior level, 60 players have registered, said Kent Carlson, who, along with Brad Peters and Craig VanThuyne, is assisting head coach Amy Flynn.

Flynn said the first week of junior badminton concluded with tryouts to determine competitive and recreational teams. Twenty-five students were placed on the competitive squad and 35 on the recreational team.

The recreational team practises Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and during Wednesday noon hours. The competitive team practises Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and at noon on Tuesdays.

Recreational games are scheduled for March 20 in Biggar and March 26 in Rosetown against Biggar.

Competitive tournaments are set for March 14 in Rosetown, March 21 in Biggar, March 26 in Unity and March 27 in Wilkie.

Inter-sectional playoffs will be held in Rosetown on April 14, sectional playoffs also in Rosetown on April 16 and district playoffs in Biggar on April 21.

Basketball

The senior basketball teams at RCHS are entering the final stretch of their seasons.

The senior girls were to compete in a tournament in Assiniboia this past weekend. Conference playoffs are scheduled for March 13-14 in Biggar, with the host Blazers joined by teams from Unity, Delisle, Maidstone and LCBI.

The senior boys Royals will compete in conference playoffs in Watrous that same weekend. Teams from Delisle, LCBI, Outlook and Biggar are expected to join the host Wildcats.

The Royals competed in a tournament in Davidson on Friday and Saturday.

Rosetown hosted the Outlook Blues on Feb. 24 and lost by about 10 points, coach Ben Cressman said. The Royals host the B team from John Paul II of North Battleford on Tuesday and the LCBI Bisons on Thursday, with both games starting at 5:30 p.m.

As a final tune-up before playoffs, the Royals will compete in a tournament in Kindersley this weekend.
