Basketball

Senior basketball teams at Rosetown Central High School had to win games last Friday to stay in conference playoffs this past weekend.

The senior boy Royals lost 42-41 to the Biggar Blazers in Watrous that day, which ended their season. Only two of six teams in Watrous were to qualify for regional playoffs.

Their senior girl schoolmates won their Friday game, defeating the Delisle Rebels in Biggar 81-42. Their win put them among the top four teams and qualified them for regional playoffs.

The girl Royals were to play the LCBI Bisons in a game starting at 12:45 p.m., after press time for this issue. Should they have won, the girl Royals would play in the conference final. A loss to the Bisons would only affect their seeding for regional playoffs, the location of which hadn’t been determined at press time.

Rayna James led the Royals against Delisle with 32 points. Willemina Heinrichs scored 15, Brenna Zummack got 12 and Sydney Dessert, nine.

Charlize Gareau scored 10 points and Reese Vandenameele, nine, to lead the Rebels.

Badminton

Senior players at Rosetown Central High School have their first tournament of the season this Saturday in North Battleford. They have another next Saturday in Swift Current. The Royals have their own tournament on April 18.

Junior players at the school had a tournament here last Saturday and then have recreational games in Biggar on Friday and competitive tournaments in Biggar on Saturday, in Unity on the 26th and Wilkie on the 27th.

Wrestling

Neda Robertson of Rosetown won the gold medal in her category at the high school regional meet in Moose Jaw on March 7.

Iain St. John and Wade Halliday, fellow Elrose Wrestling Club members, also took part but did not place.

Another teammate, Easton Stan, hurt his back lifting weights earlier in the week, said club coach Russell Fersch.

Stan attempted one match but pulled out, said Fersch.

Robertson qualified for the provincial meet, which was to be held this past Friday and Saturday at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon.

Bowling

Local bowlers are expected to compete in Masters tournaments in Saskatoon on Saturday and Sunday.

The Prince Albert 5 team won the fourth annual Les Wardrop Memorial Tournament held here on March 6-8. Twenty-five four-person teams took part.

James Vermette, Jessica Dix, Derek Hlewka and Matthew Parenteau finished with a best three-out-of-four-game score of 3,869.

Vermette, Dix, Parenteau and Derek Bird made up the second-place Prince Albert 2 team, which had a 3,804 score.

The Rosetown-Biggar 2 team of Mark Moon, Janet Moon, Lanny Lamarche and Val Fossen bowled a 3,736 score for third.

The Rosetown 2 team of Dave Brigham, Mik Pridmore, Cliff Forsyth and Walter Fernets finished with a 3,671 score for fourth.

Gymnastics

Several Rosetown Gymnastics Club members won medals and ribbons at the Power in the Prairies invitational meet in Saskatoon hosted by the Taiso Gymnastics Club.

“Our younger athletes are training two to four hours a week compared to a minimum of six hours in the city clubs, so to be placing in medals and ribbons is such an awesome accomplishment for our club’s athletes, competing in such a large meet,” said club coach Fern Dyer.
