Sports This Week: Basketball camp coming to RCHS

By David McIver

Basketball

Rosetown Central High School will host a basketball camp on June 7 run by Eric Magdanz, former coach of the Saskatoon Rattlers.

The camp has been something coaches Ben Cressman and Mitchell Wintonyk have been trying to get for a while, said Wintonyk, who first tried to arrange it in the fall but got busy with other things.

“Coach Cressman and I chatted about it during the season about when would be a good time, and Ben suggested June so that the kids could use some of the skills they learn when they are out at the courts shooting,” he said.

Track and field

Rosetown Central High students will take part in a sectional meet in Kindersley on May 19, said Wintonyk, who is also the school athletics director.

The West Central District meet will be in Saskatoon, starting with 3,000-metre races on May 29 and the rest of the events the following day.

The provincial meet will be held in Saskatoon on June 5 and 6.

Flag football

Practices started on April 26, and the first games are set for Wednesday evening on the high school field. The season ends on June 3.

Local organizers had asked on the high school Facebook page if there was interest in girls flag football.

The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association has been looking at adding this as a championship in the future, and SHSAA staff had asked athletic district officials to run a few competitions in the spring to see what the interest level is, said Wintonyk.

Dinsmore school badminton

Charity Pajunen and Macey Edstrom placed third in girls doubles at district playoffs in Kindersley on April 23.

They were to take part in regional playoffs in Moose Jaw last Saturday because one of the top two teams at those playoffs couldn’t attend, said school athletics director Lance Morrison.

Blake Lawes finished third in boys singles in the district playoffs.

Those three were the only Dinsmore Composite players to finish in the top three in their categories, said Morrison.

Racing return

After a year off to recover from an injury, Harold Litzenberger of Rosetown is returning to endurance racing.

Because of the year off, Litzenberger has only entered three races this year instead of the usual four.

First will be the Reesor 50-mile race in the Cypress Hills on May 16.

He will do the 12-hour Hoot ’n Howl race on the Wascana Trail northwest of Regina on July 25 and 26.

Litzenberger has run that twice before. His last race is also one he has run before: the 50-kilometre Barkley Fall Classic, held near Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Sept. 19.

Pickleball

It may be too early to say it, but it looks like pickleball might move outdoors this week.

The attendance on what appeared to be the last indoor action, held on April 27 at the civic centre, was 11. The average for the indoor season has been 10, said one of the regulars, Kim Evans.

Karate

The beginners class wrapped up on April 30. The intermediate class runs until May 14.

After a two-week holiday break for instructors, the club will have one practice a week in June, said club instructor Randy McIntyre.
