Remember When: Twin Towers Ski Area
Gary Blanke (right) tracks the time for this skier and others during a timed race at the 25th anniversary celebrations of Twin Towers Ski Area in January 1999. In 1972, a small committee was gathered by the Stranraer Elks Lodge to discuss the feasibility of a downhill skiing facility. The hills south of the community seemed like they’d suit such a venture. Much investigating, research, and fundraising was done and by December 1973, public skiing was open at the chosen site, two miles south of Stranraer. The ski area had electrical lifts and varying runs, from novice to expert. Many school ski trips took place here and fond memories were made by all before it ceased operations. It stands as further proof that small communities can accomplish big things.
