Minor Hockey Weekend recap: Redwings win thriller, Royals split hoops action
Minor Hockey Weekend ran Jan. 16-18 in typical fashion, though some scores weren’t available.
Despite being tired from playing the night before, the U-18 Redwings edged the Edam-Turtleford-Glaslyn Three Stars 5-4 here on Saturday. The Outlook Ice Hawks beat them 3-1 on Friday. The other Friday game featured U-13 girls, with the Delisle Bruins edging the Western Prairie Blaze 3-2.
The U-13 Redwings lost 14-3 to Eston on Saturday afternoon. Finn Cannon scored twice and Foster Hayes added the other goal. The U-11 Billet Redwings edged the Elrose Aces 9-8 on Saturday.
In U-9 action, the Sparks Redwings beat the Gilchrist Redwings 8-3. The Leavins team defeated the Swift Current Colts 11-4 before losing 7-4 to the Clavet Cougars. The U-11 Gilchrist Redwings hammered the Biggar Nationals 11-1. Right after, another Nationals team got revenge in a U-15 boys game, defeating the Redwings 6-3.
Basketball
In senior boys play, the Royals defeated the Biggar Blazers 54-48 in Biggar on Jan. 15.
The Rosetown Central High senior girls placed sixth at an eight-team tournament at LCBI High School in Outlook on Jan. 16-17. They lost by two points to the host Bisons in the consolation final, despite leading by six points with a few minutes left, said coach Trinity Grant. She said it was likely the Royals’ best game for rebounding and called the weekend a valuable experience.
The junior boys Royals hosted the Leader Saints on Jan. 18 and the Biggar Blazers on Jan. 19. They lost to the Saints 46-42 but defeated the Blazers 63-32. Will Speir led Rosetown with 12 points against the Saints, followed by Henry Wiens with nine and Caleb Woudwijk with eight. Conrad Prosser and former area resident Coldin Dale each scored 13 points for the Saints.
Jasper Adnam scored 17 points and Henry Wiens added 13 in the win over Biggar. Blazer scoring details weren’t available.
The junior girls Royals hosted Biggar the same day and rolled to a 47-8 win. Sydney Dessert scored 16 points, Alicia Cressman had 10 and Gracie Rawson finished with nine. Meeka Danychuk scored four points for the Blazers.
High school curling
The Rosetown Central High junior girls team plays in Outlook today (Tuesday), heads to a youth spiel in Outlook on Saturday, hosts Westcliffe Composite School of Marengo on Feb. 4 and then travels to Dinsmore on Feb. 11, said co-coach Darby Freistadt.
Club volleyball
The Rosetown-based U-16 Wind volleyball team played a Sask Cup tournament in Regina this past weekend. The team goes to a tournament in Medicine Hat on Feb. 21-22 and has another Sask Cup in Saskatoon on March 14-15 before provincial playoffs in Saskatoon on April 10-12, said coach Kyla Bradley.
Pool
The team of Glen Matro Sr. and Erwin Tolentino won the A side of the pool tournament held Jan. 18 at the local bowling alley. The father-and-son team of Aaron and Brayden Walker won the B side, said Penny Andersen from the alley.
