Looking Back: 70 years ago, High-water mark from spring flooding

110 years ago - April 13, 1916

Col. R. P. Laurie, named as the commander of a battalion to be formed in the former federal constituency of Battleford, the 232nd, met with Rosetown council and the Citizens’ Recruiting Committee to investigate the possibility of Rosetown being the headquarters of a company. Capt. Walter Leslie of Battleford was to be the recruiting officer stationed here and was to have headquarters in the office of Dr. Myers on the west side of Main Street.

Members of the Rosetown Board of Health heard a report for 1915. The report noted 20 cases of whooping cough with one death; one case of measles and four of typhoid fever, with no deaths from either; and two cases of tuberculosis with one death.

100 years ago - April 22, 1926

The two United Church congregations in Rosetown voted in favour of recommendations to move toward uniting. Each group was to elect five elders and six stewards to boards of 10 and 12, respectively.

Gates, who had in mind ’the strange romantic love adventures of the flapper you know.’ The story is a most interesting one and published by arrangements with First National Pictures, Inc.”

70 years ago - April 19, 1956

A photo showed the high-water mark from spring flooding, just below the the Highway 4 bridge on Eagle Creek on April 16. Within two hours of this picture, the water level dropped about six inches. In 1948, the creek went right over the bridge. But since then, the bridge had been rebuilt and the highway heightened and straightened. Danny Kwon of the Deluxe Café took the picture.

Births at Rosetown Union Hospital included a daughter for each of Mr. and Mrs. James Podhordeski of Rosetown on April 13 and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Birch of Harris on April 17 and a son each for two Rosetown couples: Mr. and Mrs. Roland Pelletier on April 15 and Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Anderson on the 16th.

Mona St. John, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stan St. John of Brock, a nurse at City Hospital in Saskatoon, had received a scholarship. It would enable her to study at the University of Saskatchewan and then return to the hospital as a nursing supervisor.

50 years ago - April 21, 1976

The 55-member Rosetown Composite High School band recently gave concerts at four West Coast ports, according to the April 14, 1976 Vancouver Sun, which had a photo of four of them playing horns aboard the passenger-freighter Northland Prince.

A photo showed Gr. 1-6 winners of the Brock Elementary School oratory contest: Sandy Desrosiers, Cecily Strutt, Tami Dagg, Lisa Jones, Dean Tide and Robbie Kelly.

30 years ago - April 22, 1996

The RM of St. Andrews was to share space in the office of the Town of Rosetown, said St. Andrews reeve Ken Ogle. When the present town administrator retired - in four or five years time - the two municipalities would consider sharing administrators, said Rosetown mayor Alma Dubé.

20 years ago - April 24, 2006

Recycling of used paint had begun at SARCan locations in the province. A photo here showed employees Bernie O’Donnell and Laurie Gregory holding cans of paint which had already been dropped off.

Before-and-after photos were of a gasoline price sign at a local service station. In three hours, the price went from $104.9 per litre to $110.9. It had been 94¢ per litre a few weeks before.
