110 years ago - June 13, 1916
The name of Lance-Cpl. W. W. McNish appeared on a recent list of those wounded “in the heavy fighting in which the Canadians have been engaged.”
A concert of sacred music at the Methodist church raised “the tidy sum” of $19.20 for the service and relief work of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire chapter here.
100 years ago - June 17, 1926
A fire of unknown origin destroyed C. Lotts’ farmhouse, located eight and a half miles northeast of town, on the morning of June 15. The family was home then, but they only saved a few bedclothes and a writing desk. Mr. Lotts suffered a severely sprained ankle.
Jean Johnston, a 13-year-old student at Jerome School, southeast of town, had won a prize in a contest among girls and boys of the Dominion. The contest sought the best short essay on “The friendship between Great Britain, Canada and the United States and how to maintain it.” Her essay was judged to be 12th best among 834 entries.
A Chautauqua was to start here on Monday with “The Molluse,” a comedy performed by the Mahan Players.
Later that week would be performances by British pianist Herbert McFarren, tenor Robert Malone, dramatic reader John Duxbury, lecturers Charles Bayliss, Gordon B. Smith and Joel Eastman, the Russian Cathedral Choir, a trio led by violinist Ernest Toy, the Martin Erwin Players performing a comedy and, closing the Chautauqua on Saturday, Leake’s Orchestral Players.
Meanwhile, Herschel was “very fortunate in having the Chesney Players put on two of the best shows we have ever had in our town. They were here on Friday and Saturday nights,” wrote that correspondent.
Well driller J. C. Maines stated in an ad he would only charge $100 for 500 feet if he didn’t get water.
50 years ago - June 16, 1976
At its recent annual meeting, the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association honoured local farmer, hockey enthusiast and sportswriter Tom Miskell with a plaque for his outstanding contribution to amateur hockey in the province.
Kathryn Sue Kellington of Rosetown graduated in nursing from the Foothills Provincial General Hospital in Calgary.
A photo showed Bill Betts, Rosetown Chamber of Commerce president, presenting a cheque for $50 to Ron Tyreman of Rosetown for his winning entry in the town sign promotion. More than 56 entries from as far away as Watrous had been submitted. Tyreman’s entry showed a wheat plant and a sheaf and the words “Rosetown at the heart of the wheatbelt.”
Rosetown Agencies Ltd. announced a new staff member in Roberta (Bobbie) Crossman. She’d married Grant that April, stated a wedding report in the same issue.
30 years ago - June 17, 1996
A decision by Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Larry Kyle handed control of Precision Metal Fabricating Ltd. to the Rosetown and District Community Bond Corporation. The decision “probably gives us a little more than we expected,” said bond corporation chairperson Reinie Janke.
In the past week, a sinkhole, about eight feet in diameter and six feet deep, had appeared in a field of peas on Bob Nunweiler’s land southwest of Rosetown. Groundwater action was the most likely cause, said Jim Merriam, a geophysics professor at the University of Saskatchewan.
20 years ago - June 19, 2006
Workers were replacing boards that had been in the Rosetown Sports Centre since it was built. While the originals were made entirely of wood, the new ones had steel uprights and horizontal wooden boards covered with plastic, said recreation director Brian Marlowe.
