Looking Back: 50 years ago, fire of unknown origin

110 years ago - May 18, 1916

After months of sickness, Hazel Marion, 17 and the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Courtland L. Burtwistle, died. School was dismissed for her funeral. The “Tried and True” school class, of which she was a member, the Methodist church Bible class, Masons and others brought flowers that covered the casket.

Those attending the D’Arcy Board of Trade meeting learned that a new railway station was to be completed there by Sept. 1. The village already had a new elevator and a new hardware and implement store.

Men’s shirts were on for 75¢ each at W. G. King & Co.

100 years ago - May 20, 1926

A train carrying 68 Saskatoon business and professional men, including its mayor, was touring the Goose Lake country and arrived here at 11:45 a.m.

Mayor A. H. Burton and board of trade officials welcomed them and invited them to dinner, split between the Albion and Rosetown Hotels and the Paris Café and Innes Confectionery. The Saskatoon group stayed three and a half hours, instead of the usual two.

Army & Navy Veterans’ Association members decided to form a branch of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League. All veterans were asked to join the branch, which would amalgamate almost all former veterans associations.

At a meeting in the club room of First United Church, those present formed a ladies golf club.

70 years ago - May 17, 1956

James E. Baikie, superintendent of schools for the Rosetown Superintendency, had been chosen, with about 70 others, to attend a three-week course in Edmonton on educational leadership problems in communities.

A photo showed J. R. Franklin of Rosetown with parents Mr. and Mrs. Norman Franklin and sister Mary Pat at his graduation from Royal Roads Canadian Service College in Victoria. He and 61 other grads were to enroll in the fall at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont.

Ten speakers selected by the Kiwanis Club of Saskatoon were guests at the Rosetown Composite High School career night. They represented government service, secretarial and clerical work, engineering, social work, radio and television, law, pharmacy, agriculture, teaching and the RCMP.

50 years ago - May 19, 1976

A fire of unknown origin broke out in the rear of Dubé’s Shop-Rite around 6 p.m. on May 12. Firefighters and volunteers contained the fire to the store. Owner Bill Dubé hoped to re-open soon with all new stock as the old stock had to be disposed of.

Fire Chief Paul Hrynkiw told Rosetown council on May 17 that there had been six fires - an “excessive number” - so far that month.

Dr. J. David Ledding won the Schering $1,000 post-graduate study award, given annually to one medical doctor in Western Canada for further study.

A front-page photo showed winners of Martha Awards at the 50th anniversary celebration of St. Theresa’s Parish Catholic Women’s League: Pauline Korol, Theresa Mazzei, Irene Paquette, Lucille Bechard, Lucille Dubois, Edith Walter, Bess Ogle and Jeannette Sparks.

30 years ago - May 21, 1996

Visiting was Bill Carter, who went from senior Redwing goaltender to an aviation career that included doing stunts for air shows. Carter first arrived in 1964, worked for Jim Nash at the Rosetown Bakery and wed Judy MacDonald, whose parents owned Hi-Tone Cleaners. They left in 1967 for airline pilot work.

20 years ago - May 23, 2006

Rosetown council had accepted the tender from Silverado Demolition Inc. of Saskatoon to tear down the Lockwood Block at 117 Main Street, said Alderman Tim Askin, who didn’t state the amount.
