Looking Back: 110 years ago, snowdrifts 10 feet high

110 years ago - March 30, 1916

Snowdrifts 10 feet high could be seen on 27-15, wrote the Ivor correspondent who also noted some livestock purchases. R. Deitz had bought a pair of mules. “He evidently has no liking for power machinery.”

Mr. Deitz wasn’t alone. On March 24, the Bourbon Farming Co. shipped in 35 more mules to its farm a few miles north of Hughton, also stated the Ivor correspondent.

Reg Spindler had decided to rejoin his old regiment in England and  wished to sell his lot, building, furniture and effects.

Long-time merchant Harry Ball was also leaving. A farewell smoker for him was to be held at the Rex Theatre.

100 years ago - April 4, 1926

At its board meeting, Edwin Jones “strongly desired” to resign as secretary of the Rosetown Agricultural Association. But directors held a unanimous standing vote for him to stay on another year and Jones agreed to that.

On Easter Monday, April 5, a hockey game between Herschel and Stranraer teams was to be broadcast on radio by CFQC, said the Herschel correspondent.

70 years ago - March 29, 1956

Well-known local businessman Jack Bellward recently left town for Vancouver to take the position of provincial manager for the Provident Investment Co. Bellward had opened his men’s wear store here in 1947. In 1949 he also took over the Robinson store from Cec Lindsay and ran it until July 1955.

About 25 people attended a meeting at Zealandia School for the purpose of forming a home and school association.

Wilkie Kinsmen and Columbian clubs were sponsoring a five-car bingo on June 6 with Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, Chevrolet and Studebaker makes to be won.

50 years ago - March 31, 1976

Elks Exalted Ruler Peter Derksen presented Fred Walter with a life membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Walter, a long-time member, had been secretary of the lodge here and “very actively involved with” the Elkette Figure Skating Association.

About 20 retailers attended the Rosetown Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee meeting, at which they set store hours. Late shopping until 9 p.m. would run from Saturday, Sept. 4 until year end.

Firestone DR 78-14 steel radial 500 whitewall tires were selling for $52.80 each installed at Rosetown Chrysler Plymouth Ltd.

Hairstylists Judy and Iris were opening the Shadow Boutique at 314 Main St., across from Macleods.

The Rosetown Gulf Coffee Shop, closed for renovations, advertised for help: an assistant manager/manageress for $650 per month, full- and part-time waiter/waitresses for $3.50 and $3 per hour, respectively; first cook for $4.25 per hour and second cook for $3.75 per hour.

30 years ago - April 1, 1996

Team captain Lindsay Hayes and assistant captain Scott Hollick hold the banner they and the rest of the Midget AA Redwings won as Centre Four league champions on the past Thursday.

20 years ago - April 3, 2006

Jessica Morton, 15, of the Ruthilda area was collecting pens for Canadian soldiers to hand out in Afghanistan. Her cousin, Master Corporal Ladean Morton, who had been stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan since Jan. 27, told her how excited children got when Canadian soldiers gave them a pen. Morton was collecting them, crayons and barrettes.

The recently formed West Central Justice Committee was to introduce restorative justice to this area. Shown in a signing-ceremony photo were committee members Jim Turner and Mellodee Hansen, both of Rosetown.
