Looking Back: 110 years ago, driving at night
110 years ago - May 11, 1916
People complained of drivers running their cars at night without front and rear lights on and without licence numbers displayed.
Lieut. Fred Gregory of the 176th Battalion wed in St. Catharines, Ont. Before he’d joined up, Gregory had homesteaded and farmed the northeast quarter of 14-31-17, in the Herschel district.
Showing at the Rex Theatre was The Perils of Pauline, the latest in a movie series in which star Pearl White had risked her life many times, resulting in severe injuries and, once, six months in hospital. “She nearly lost her life when she fell over a cliff.”

100 years ago - May 13, 1926
Someone broke into the Canadian Pacific Railway ticket office during the noon hour on May 12 and took some blank tickets. The break-in was promptly discovered after lunch. Going by a description of the suspect, Police Chief Joe Heartwell made an arrest around 1:30 p.m. A man who had arrived from Kerrobert a few days ago appeared before Justices of the Peace N. McVicar and E. A. Hewat and got a sentence of three months in jail with hard labour.
Charles James Castle, 70, who had farmed in the Herschel district, died in the Wolseley Home for the Infirm from cancer.
C. E. Conlin was selling Pontiac Six sedans and coupes for $1,300 f.o.b. Rosetown.
Marcel hairdos cost only 50¢ at The Erin.
70 years ago - May 10, 1956
Sixty cadets attended the annual Rosetown Legion Cadet Corps inspection. They put on two demonstrations for the inspecting officer, Brigadier R. E. Reynolds, and his inspecting party of Mayor Herb Greenwood, RCMP Cpl. Al Tingle, Legion secretary Stan Shields, Legion president Stan Cheyne and corps commander Lieut. Scott McLeod. Doug Collins, Jim Trafford, Gerry Bryant, Fred Wickett, David Robinson, Garry Lawrence, Grant Hastings and Roderich Lucier did a rifle drill. Don Harvey, Norman Collins and Robert Castignier did a Bren gun demonstration. Major Wayne Glass received the outstanding cadet award.
Kingsland-district pioneer William Slocombe died at his home in Biggar on May 3.
Mother’s Day specials at the Shop-Rite included one-pound boxes of Ganong and Williard’s chocolates for $1.35 and 95¢, respectively.
King’s Ltd. had specials of nylons for $1.35-1.75 and blouses for $1.95-5.95.
50 years ago - May 12, 1976
A photo from Redwing Recognition Night showed Marguerite Brookbank, who had donated the trophy for most valuable player, presenting that trophy to Ed Lavigne.
Willard Kallio, president of the west central branch of the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association, recently presented an honorary life membership to Victor Merritt of Harris. Allan Stevens of the Rosetown unit board sponsored Merritt and spoke of his many years of work on the Harris central board. Howard Mitchell was also to be honoured but was unable to attend.

A photo showed RCMP Cpl. Marge Champion taking the fingerprints of Sam Turner, 2 1/2, at the Child Find identification day at Rosetown United Church. It had been several years since the program was last held here, said Sue Morris of the Kinettes who put it on with financial help from the United Church Women.
The Student Employment Centre had opened with Julie Quinney, a local University of Saskatchewan commerce student, in charge.

A photo showed a crane lowering onto a flat-deck trailer the Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket from what had been the franchise location. The restaurant had closed on Nov. 8, 2005 after 29 years in Rosetown.
