Looking Back: 110 years ago, discharged from war service

110 years ago - June 1, 1916

James Rose learned that his son Frank had been discharged, having been incapacitated for further war service. Frank Rose had been wounded in the knee and gassed and confined to hospital for weeks. One could get a good meal and a clean bed for 25¢ each at the C.M.A. Restaurant.

100 years ago - June 3, 1926

Several people were building or adding on to houses. W. E. Innis was building a house on the west side of Main Street near the corner of Fourth Avenue. It would be 26 by 28 feet, one and a half storeys high with a full basement, four rooms on each of the first and second floors and a second-floor bathroom. Three others were putting up bungalows: H. A. Javens on Fifth Avenue East; H. Holler, with four bedrooms and a bathroom, on the same avenue; and L. M. Ogle on Railway Avenue. W. C. Marfell was moving two houses from the school section to his lots on Railway Ave. Workers had nearly completed the additional storey on C. E. Conlin's house on Third Avenue West. Apart from interior work, the enlargement and raising of P. Davies' Fifth Avenue West house to one and a half storeys was done.

70 years ago - May 31, 1956

Darlene McLeod of Rosetown and Bounty, a student at the University of Madison in Wisconsin, had been elected as chapter president of Sigma Alpha Iota, a national music sorority. She was to represent the college at the sorority's national convention in Washington, D.C. She also won the Phi Beta Scholarship for excellence in music. Over 700 people attended the Rosetown Composite High graduation in the new gymnasium. Guest speaker was the minister of education, Woodrow Lloyd. The article had to be continued in the next issue. At St. Joseph's School graduation exercises, M.C. Frank Klein also won a prize for Gr. 12 proficiency. Helen Yuers played two piano solos. Valedictorian Jeannine Paquette spoke of the grads' duty to uphold the principles of Western civilization. At the Dodsland School grad banquet, Carol Lynn Einerson gave the valedictory address. Classmates David Bougher, Derry Dowd and John Babiuk gave or replied to toasts.

50 years ago - June 2, 1976

Three people graduated from post-secondary educational institutions. Laurie Henderson of Herschel graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of education degree in music from the University of Arizona at Tempe. She was to teach French horn at the Summer School of the Arts at Fort Qu'Appelle that summer. Mrs. Ulrick Bru (née Lovona Joy Wearing), an Elrose Composite High School alumna, had completed medical receptionist training at the Professional Training Institute in Calgary. Colin Arthur Smith, son of John E. Smith of Rosetown and a Rosetown Composite High graduate, completed a two-year administration program at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute.

30 years ago - June 3, 1996

A photo showed Peter Uhryn sanding a part for the mini golf course here. Organizers hoped to open the course that month, said chair Randy McIntyre. In the second part of a four-part series Finding your way on the 'Net, Penny Sim of Sim Solutions explained how to get started and about internet etiquette or 'Netiquette.' Rosetown Rodeo queen contestants were Erica Britton of Eston, Georjeana Fullerton of Fiske, Shari Brown of D'Arcy and Sandi Pope of Plato.

20 years ago - June 12, 2006

Workers had begun construction of a lentil-splitting plant in Zealandia. Donald Hanley, spokesperson for Can-India Pulses International Ltd., said he hoped that it would be running that fall.
