Gymnasts shine at Saskatoon meet as Rosetown sports season rolls on

Bowling

The bowling Tournament of Champions is to be held on Wednesday.

The first Monday night drop-in bowling league for the spring and summer was to start yesterday at the local alley. That was not the last day of the regular bowling season, as last week’s column erroneously stated. I apologize for that mistake.

Wrestling

The Elrose Wrestling Club is done for the season, with the exception of those wrestlers going to the national championship meet in Grande Prairie, Alta., on April 24-26, said club coach Russell Fersch.

Karate

Rosetown Karate Club members will likely take part in the Saskatchewan Karate Association spring tournament, which is to be held in Wadena on Saturday.

Gymnastics

Rosetown Gymnastics Club members were to compete in a meet in Moose Jaw this past weekend.

Eighteen members attended the Personal Best Invitational, held by the Can-Am club in Saskatoon last Thursday and Friday, April 9-10, said club coach Fern Dyer.

In the bronze inter-club category, Taylor Van Hove earned a silver medal.

In the Xcel bronze category, four members competed in the nine- to 11-year-old class. Kenley Craig placed first on vault, eighth on bars, fifth on beam, fourth on floor and fourth all-around. Mahlon Johnson finished third on vault, fourth on bars, sixth on beam, seventh on floor and fifth all-around. Violet Gray placed fifth on vault, while Kassie Aylward came in eighth on vault.

Three club members took part in the Xcel bronze 11-13-year-old group. Aubrey Lovenuk came in second on vault, bars and all-around, with a fifth on floor. Alexus Cledgett placed fourth on vault, floor and all-around, with a third on bars and second on beam. Thea Sedgwick earned a sixth on vault, fifth on bars, third on beam, seventh on floor and eighth all-around.

Two members competed in the Xcel silver 11-year-old group.

Kamryn Ismond placed fourth on vault and sixth on floor, with Ryleigh Herman coming in eighth on vault and floor and fifth on bars.

Two other athletes from the Rosetown club participated in the Xcel silver 12-14-year-old group.

Avery Hey placed sixth on vault and bars, third on floor and sixth all-around.

Karlee Anholt finished eighth on vault, seventh on beam, sixth on floor and seventh all-around.

Two club members competed in the Xcel gold 12-year-old group.

Audyn Gilroy placed seventh on vault, fifth on bars, fourth on beam, seventh on floor and sixth all-around.

Paysley Ogilvie finished eighth on bars and beam.

Among 13-year-olds in the Xcel gold category, Maddi Van Hove finished fourth on vault, sixth on bars, seventh on beam, and fifth on floor and all-around. Myla Van Hove placed sixth on vault, seventh on bars, floor and all-around, and second on beam.

Among 14- to 15-year-olds, Arabella Gilroy finished third on vault, eighth on bars, sixth on beam, and seventh on floor and all-around.

As the theme of the meet was Personal Best, any athlete who received their highest all-around score of the year received a special personal best medal, said the coach.

Kenley Craig, Aubrey Lovenuk, Alexus Cledgett, Thea Sedgwick, Maddi Van Hove and Myla Van Hove received medals, she said.

Spring hockey game

The AGT Centre hosted a spring hockey exhibition game on April 6, a rarity for Rosetown.

The 2013 Sask. West Wheat Kings defeated the 2014 Saskatoon Jr. Royals 4-2.

Dom Krushelniski, Jett Shepherd, Caleb Hohman and Houston Loehndorf scored goals for the winning side, all born in 2013.

Porter Gingras and Weston Strain got goals for the Jr. Royals, who were born in 2014. That team, while based out of Saskatoon, includes Mason Menei from Rosetown and other players from Battleford and Melfort, said one of the off-ice officials.

“Normally, all of the spring hockey tournaments are in Alberta, but with the ice still in here, it was a nice little exhibition game,” she said.
