Grey Cup tour could make Rosetown stop in March

The Grey Cup could pay a visit to Rosetown in March.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are taking the symbol of the Canadian Football League championship on a community tour and asked the town for a suitable time for a visit here.

Councillors suggested potentially suitable settings, including the Kinsmen Telemiracle luncheon tomorrow, during their Feb. 17 meeting. The meeting happened on Tuesday because of the Family Day holiday on Monday, their normal meeting night.

In a message from the football club, the teams says “they want it to stop in Rosetown” and wonders about community events where it could appear, Amanda Bors, the interim chief administrator said during the meeting.

“We had a few ideas and got back to (the Roughriders),” Bors said on Friday. “They only had a certain date that would work to come here. There’s nothing going on that day,” which she didn’t want to disclose in case the visit doesn’t happen.

Age Friendly Rosetown presents its business awards on March 10, Kelli Emmons, the recreation director, noted during the meeting. Age Friendly is also staging a public launch of its new guide to local services, likely in April, according to the group’s report to council.

Players “and/or Gainer the Gopher” are accompanying the Grey Cup on the tour, according to the Roughriders website.

After a visit to Meadow Lake scheduled for the 18th in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Winter Games, the Grey Cup was to go to Assiniboia on Thursday the 26th, Foam Lake on the 27th and Fort Qu’Appelle on the 28th. Two appearances in Saskatoon follow on March 1: at the Telemiracle broadcast from noon to 1 p.m. and at Wanuskewin Heritage Park later that afternoon.
