Downtown banner project gets council approval

New banners mounted on power poles for most of the year are expected to enhance the downtown’s appearance after town council approved a request from Local Bloom.

Councillors gave the green light during their Feb. 17 meeting.

The town currently has 13 suitable frames for banners, and staff can build additional ones if required, recreation director Kellie Emmons told council.

The banners would replace the Christmas lights and have received approval from SaskPower, said interim chief administrative officer Amanda Bors. They would hang above the flower pots and high enough to clear equipment passing underneath, she added.

Bors said the group plans to begin with a limited number of banners to evaluate how well they perform and withstand weather before expanding the project. She said Local Bloom appears to have a design prepared.

Emmons noted the group has contributed to several community projects, including Rose Charter, Lovett Park, the Rose Trail, plantings around the post office and the downtown flower pots.

Council agreed to the concept and directed staff to prepare a formal agreement with the group.
