Council approves new solicitor support, urges firefighter recruitment

Town councillors have approved a few changes to the appointees who work on their behalf.

They also formally approved the current members of the fire department, while noting that the department needs more firefighters.

“We haven’t (advertised the need) for a while, but we can,” said Amanda Bors, the acting chief administrator, who was asked about recruitment efforts during the Jan. 19 meeting. “They definitely want some more.”

The department had a recruitment table at the business garage sale in September and the Harvest Family Festival in October, councillors recalled.

At the Jan. 19 meeting, they added STM Law of Rosetown to the town solicitor position to help with contracts and other needs. James Turner, now retired, had led that work.

Councillors appointed M. Kim Anderson of Robertson Stromberg in Saskatoon for litigation purposes during their Jan. 5 meeting. Anderson is “working the files right now,” Bors said then.

Councillors will continue meeting twice a month, on the first and third Monday evenings, they also decided on Jan. 5.

They didn’t change their three committees, which have rarely met since they decided to meet together twice a month a year ago. They decided to wait until after the byelection scheduled for March 18 “and assemble when we need it,” Mayor Trevor Hay said.

“I like to keep everyone on council informed about all things going on and being part of that discussion, instead of coming to a committee meeting and not knowing exactly what’s going on,” Hay said.

Nominations for the position to replace Jadwiga Dolega-Cieszkowski opened Monday and close at 4 p.m. on Feb. 11.

Councillors on Jan. 5 confirmed members of the zoning appeals and board of revision: Gregory Piska, Sherry Keith, Angelika Walker and Michele Schmidt.

Greg Carlson remains deputy mayor, and Jan. Coffey-Olson continues as acting deputy mayor.

SUMAssure, established by the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, remains the town’s insurance provider.

Staff with Municode Services of Warman continue in charge of commercial and building inspections. Stark and Marsh from Swift Current remains the town auditor, and Aecom in Saskatoon continues as engineer of record.

Sharon Clark remains the town’s representative on the Wheatland Regional and Rosetown Centennial library boards, and Courtney Rye serves with Meridian Community Futures.
